I am so excited to share the second completed room in our new build, the en suite of my eldest daughter Sara. Make no mistake, she selected everything and had a clear vision of what she wanted from the very beginning. We incorporated pink, grey and black, carrying in the color palette from her bedroom.
There were many late nights playing around with the layout of her space. We knew we wanted to preserve a certain minimum bedroom size to accommodate a future queen size bed and possibly a desk. That meant dividing the remaining space into the walk-in closet and bathroom. After many changes we ended up finalizing the size of the shower first, then building everything out from there.
We originally selected Benjamin Moore’s Touch of Pink (2008-70) and while it is a beautiful color, when the sun would stream in it would turn a brighter rosier shade, which was not the hint of pink she was looking for. So we pivoted and lightened the shade to what we called a Pinch of Pink instead. Thankfully the painter had a sense of humor. Shoutout to our local Benjamin Moore supplier and rep who helped us create the perfect shade. And the biggest thanks goes to my brother-in-law who taught us all things paint being that he works for Benjamin Moore!
As co-GC I was always trying to push, without pushing, to get things done. In order to not back up other trades, I decided to learn how to grout and spent a Saturday grouting the shower. My younger daughter helped, and while we got ONE wall done in a six hour time period, it was not easy…or perfect. Some areas may have needed a little touch-up (sorry to the on site GC) but it was fun to work on our own project and see progress. I learned a lot, mainly that I should never grout again, and kudos to all the real installers out there!
Here is the final product:
There are a few things left to add: art for the walls; swapping the drain for black to match; and adding some additional storage. All of the items were stock selections because we were in a time crunch. Anyone who has built a home knows, even with the best intentions of scheduling ahead, there are inevitable hiccups and delays. That being said, I was able to source things that worked out well and most importantly created the look Sara had envisioned.
